《View from The Window》

Elena Meneghini, Ida Hagen, Seoyoung Shin, Bosong Kang, Jeeyun Jung

Inspired by their surroundings, five textile artists from Stockholm, Oslo, Milano, and Seoul have captured landscapes through different materials, textures, and patterns of weaving.

These works, created by weaving threads over a long period of time, are inspired by their everyday life and natural surroundings.
Placed in the artists’ original habitat, the works act as windows to the outside world but can also transport one to an entirely different landscape when placed in the unfamiliar.

Elena Meneghini 



- Artist

엘레나 메네기니는 이탈리아 밀라노 기반의 위버이자 텍스타일 디자이너입니다. 이탈리아 볼차노 대학에서 디자인 전공을 하고, 그 후 5년간 브랜드 포르나세티에서 그래픽 디자이너로 일했습니다. 2017년부터 1970년대와 1990년대 사이 직물 디자이너와 예술가의 국제 집단에 의해 생산된 ‘South Tyrolean Handdruck’ 컬렉션의 스크린 프린트 패브릭 생산을 기록하고 수집하는 프로젝트인 ‘Neue Serie Handdruck’을 큐레이팅 및 감독하고 있으며 2020년 스웨덴 공예 학교인 카펠라고든에 입학하여 2년 동안 직물 작업에 더욱 집중하였습니다. 2021년에는 동료들과 함께 밀라노에 기반을 둔 직조 문화 연구와 교육 및 생산 공간인 ‘Dòte’를 설립하여 활동하고 있습니다.

“Through different threads, textures and weaving patterns, I explore the possibilities that the gaze and manual ability have in relation to paper yarn. A material usually associated with the concept of two dimensionality, once filtered through the manual looms, come to life, acquiring weight and volume once extracted from them. I have been exploring paper yarn as a weaving material, discovering its unexpectedly strong soul that seems to contrast not only with the fragility that is usually attributed to such material, but also with its ultimate lightness once it becomes fabric.”

“This series of three hand-woven wall hangings are made of sustainable and soft natural materials, such as mohair, alpaca, silk and Norwegian wool. While exploring different colors and materials via the traditional weaving technique “halvdräll”, a gradient pattern suddenly appears. Thin fiber lines slowly growing thicker before gradually fading out again … This is the starting point for these wall hangings creating a dialogue between colors, materials and time. The color choice in these pieces is inspired by the northern lights – this fascinating natural phenomenon of colors dancing on the sky in wavy movements, much like the gradient pattern in these wall hangings.”

“손으로 짠 벽걸이 3종 시리즈는 모헤어, 알파카, 실크, 노르웨이 양모 등의 지속 가능하고 부드러운 천연 소재로 제작하였습니다. 전통적인 직조 기법인 “halvdräll”으로 작업하였으며, 섬유 선이 천천히 두꺼워지다가 다시 점차 사라지는 그러데이션 패턴을 나타냅니다. 오로라에서 영감을 받은 색상들로 작업을 하였으며, 물결 모양의 움직임으로 하늘에서 춤추는 모습을 그렸습니다.”

Seoyoung Shin

신서영은 텍스타일 작업에 그녀의 이야기와 그녀가 마주했던 공간을 담습니다. 스톡홀름을 기반으로 활동하는 신서영 작가는 그녀의 독립 스튜디오 SS atelier를 통해 텍스타일 디자인과 아트의 영역에서 다양한 작업들을 만들어내고 있습니다. 그녀가 작업한 카펫, 패턴 디자인, 블랭킷 및 인스톨레이션 작업들에는 스웨덴에서 오랜 세월 이어져온 전통 직조와 텍스타일 기법들이 그녀의 감각으로 해석되어 융해되어 있습니다.

- Description

“The beginning of inspiration is always nearby. On a sunny day, I go out and explore the beautiful surface that the sunlight hits, and on a rainy day, it's fun to look out the window and listen to the sound of the rain. I created a weaving series with the theme of rain. Under the <Rain> series, as the rain itself has different names, I tried to express rain in various forms by mixing commonly used textile materials such as linen, wool, and silk with basic weaving methods such as plain weave.

- Description

꽃비가 내리는 모습을 담아낸 직조작업. 린넨실을 사용하여 창문의 형태를 따서 미그쉘(mygg-tjall)이라는 스웨덴식 기법으로 직조하고,

창밖으로 흩뿌리는 빗물의 형태를 꼭두서니(madder)물을 들여 붉게 천연 염색한 울실과 린넨실로 표현한 작업. 아래 짙은 부분은 비에 젖은 느낌을 표현하였습니다.

- Description

Stockholm 2022 작업은 composition 시리즈 중 Stockholm을 테마로 한 작업입니다. 2021년 여름부터 스톡홀름에서 처음 사계절을 보내고나서  도시의 색, 공기의 느낌, 건물, 자연경관 등에서 영감을 받아 시작되었습니다.

미니 Flossa 카펫 작품에 색, 형태, 질감을 담았습니다. 날실로 만든 작은 도화지에 다양한 형태를 구성하고, 의식과 무의식 사이에서 찾아낸 색을 맞춰서 볼륨감을 부여하는 작업입니다. 색은 저의 발걸음을 가볍게 하고 두꺼운 울 실로 작업을 하는 건 큰 즐거움입니다.
